They featured slamdancers with the likes of Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi), John Joseph (The Cro-mags) and John Brannon (Negative Approach) in the pit.

Pioneering the crossover hardcore/punk/trash metal scene, the band Cryptic Slaughter first was formed in the summer of 1984 by three guys named Les Evans, Scott Peterson and Adam Scott who were between 14 and 17 years old and met through their interest for soccer which they all played. Soon after, Bill Crooks (age 15), another soccer player, was added to the lineup and Adam Scott was let go a few months later due to conflicts regarding his parents and school.

Their first demo, Life in Grave, was put out in 1985 and became well circulated in the tape trading underground despite the limited release. Their first full length LP, Convicted, was released in 1986 on Death/Metal Blade records, which also put out such bands as D.R.I., Corrosion of Conformity, Dr. Know, The Mentors, and Beyond Possession. Within its first year of release, Convicted sold over 25,000 copies and earned Cryptic Slaughter the reputation as being one of the fastest bands in hardcore. Their next album, Money Talks, was released in 1987, which is still one of my all time favorites, mixing crushing grooves with lightning speed, Money Talks surpassed Convicted’s success by selling 35,000 in its first year and by earning Cryptic Slaughter a fanatical following around the world.

The original lineup of Cryptic Slaughter recorded their final studio album, Stream of Consciousness, in 1988. Unhappy with the recording process and the album’s production, they broke up in the summer on tour before Stream of Consciousness was released later that fall. They played their last show in Detroit on July 14, 1988.

Guitar player Les Evans reformed the band in 1989 with an entirely new lineup excluding himself, and Cryptic Slaughter released Speak your Peace in 1990 but it was short lived as they again disbanded after touring in 1990. In 2003 there was a brief Cryptic Slaughter reunion and Money Talks and Convicted were re-released with added bonus tracks from Cryptic Slaughter’s demo and live recordings but they have been virtually silent since with the only exception being one track, Lowlife, was used on Tony Hawk’s Project 8 Video Game in 2006.

The last video is kinda significant because it’s Cryptic Slaughter’s Lowlife from Tony Hawk’s Project 8, featuring me playing, and yes I thought you got bonus points for crashing into trash cans, oh well, but it’s also the first video I personally uploaded to youtube, it’s the first time I used a dvr to record what was on the television and the first time I converted a dvd to mpeg to upload to youtube.

Not sure why I all of a sudden thought of the Crumbsuckers but I did, and since I did all the old songs started popping in my head. Like New York City contemporaries such as Agnostic Front and the Cro-Mags, the Crumbsuckers were one of the original founders of 1980’s crossover scene: the bridging of metal, hardcore, and punk that temporarily united the two divergent tribes of metalheads and punks into one, bloody, unified mosh pit. Ah, the good ole days.

Getting their start in 1983, the band recorded a demo unofficially called “The Crumbsucker Cave” at Nino Studio in Baldwin with five songs, including a cover of Chubby Checker’s “The Twist”.It was with this demo that they landed their first CBGBs showcase, and subsequent Hardcore Matinees.
The band were soon an integral part of New York’s Lower East Side-based hardcore scene, cutting their teeth at the legendary dive A7 before moving on to CBGB’s famed Sunday matinees, as they and the movement gained strength. Come 1986, the Crumbsuckers consisted of vocalist Chris Notaro (ex-Krackdown), guitarists Dave Wynn and Chuck Lenihan, bassist Gary Meskil and drummer Dan Richardson, and delivered their “Life of Dreams” debut into a peeking crossover craze. A strong if rather conventional example of the genre, Life of Dreams featured a wall of razor-sharp thrash guitars, manic drum-work, and punk-grown social and political criticism, culminating in the standout “Super Tuesday,” which criticizes the 1984 presidential election. Unfortunately, the Crumbsuckers would soon fall afoul of their fans (as did Agnostic Front, around the same time) by delving too deeply in heavy metal with their second and final release in 1988 entitled B.O.M.B. - Beast on My Back, featuring shred-happy new guitarist Robert Koebler. This effort, with its longer songs and more metallish sounds, wound up disappointing most of their longtime hardcore followers and the band was frankly dead on arrival by the time they hit the road with yet another new guitarist in former Carnivore’s Marc Piovanetti. The Crumbsuckers’ lasting legacy may well have been the numerous bands which later sprung up from their ruin. Meskil and Richardson went on to found post-hardcore metallers Pro-Pain, and Richardson eventually also did time with Life of Agony and Stereomud, while Lenihan ended up with the S&M crew of the Genitorturers, a few years later.

The Accused is considered to be one of the most influential bands of the hardcore punk thrash metal crossover scene. The Accused are a Seattle thrash band that sprang up out of hardcore punk. They created a form of music called “splatter core,” which is screaming, speeding punk/metal much in the same vein with D.R.I. and Cryptic Slaughter.

Who better to shed some some light on the history of The Accused, other than the The Accussed original singer, John Dahlin.

“The band formed in late 1981 when Chibon Batterman and Tom Niemeyer moved to Whidbey Island, WA from Oxnard, CA where they were raised on a diet of Black Flag and Circle Jerks. Both were in high school. Chibon (Chewey) moved with his mom to Oak Harbor on North Whidbey Island while Tom stayed in Clinton on the south end about 35 miles away. Chewey met the only other punk in Oak Harbor while hanging out downtown. His name was Dana Collins, age 14. He could play the entire Sex Pistols LP on the drums!! Chewy and Tom formed a trio called No Reason with Dana on drums and Tom on Guitar,Chewy sang, and there was no bassist.

Sometime during that winter of 81 Chewy switched to bass and Tom sang. Their name was changed to Gang Green and then The Accused. Their sound was one part Black Flag and one part OI-English type stuff. In early 82 Dana was dragged to Hawaii by his mom and sister for vacation. There wasn’t much to do initially there but soon I ran into him while passing out fliers for some band playing at a club I unofficially worked for. My name is John Dahlin and I was the singer for the Accused from summer 82 to May 84. Anyway, I had been a punk for several years and since there were so few of us in HI Dana was instantly my friend. I was from southern WA and was moving back after graduation from HS in June. I had sung for several bands in HI already and Dana was such a good drummer. My current band at the time had him sit in for a raging version of Red Tape by the Circle Jerks. Dana asked if I would join his band when I moved back to WA. I said sure. And so I did. We wrote back and forth for the next few months. Whidbey Island is unbelievably boring so all we did was practice, and Tom liked being able to concentrate on just guitar. We got a set down pretty fast and in fall of 82 Tom Pig (pig champion) from Poison Idea and Malcom Conover from Eugene (a great scene supporter) drove up to hear us. They liked us and put us on a bill with the Fartz and P.I. in Portland in November of 82. The first Accused show.

Over the next couple years we gigged fairly irregularly mostly because we lived 60 miles north of Seattle and nobody really knew us very well. A club called The Metropolis had us play a bunch of times-even had us open for some unknown out of town band called the Replacements! Anyway times change and so do musical styles. The band was rolling with the times and started dropping some of its punk/political aesthetic for a more poser/metal image. I am, and was, a punk-I don’t do metal.I left under mutual agreement in May of 84 and Mr. Blaine took my place.

During my stay with the band we recorded tons of cassette demos and one LP of which there were only 500 made-it’s called ‘Please Pardon Our Noise-It Is A Sound of Freedom’ and was a split LP with the other band being The Rejectors. Gerry from that band is now in Black Nasty with Blaine. Scott is in Stumpy Joe. Two songs that I wrote though not really credited with are ‘Distractions’ and ‘Take My Time’. After I left, the band recorded these 2 cuts along with a few more and called it the Martha Splatterhead EP on Condar (their own ) label. I think there were 500 of these too. The songs were put on ‘The Return of Martha Splatterhead’ with some new stuff.

After ‘More Fun Than An Open Casket Funeral’ came out Chewy was booted out for drugs, which later took his life (February 96 RIP). Dana was the next to go simply because of burnout. This leaves Tom as the only original member for most of the bands history!!!! Of course, oomlats were added to the name and he started going by Tommy by that time!! They definitely earned their place in metal history.

The band had several heydays really. During the hardcore phase when I was in it we played to maybe 300 people-usually the same ones every time. We were known as a very tight good band and a lot of people knew the words to our songs. This is about 83. The next wave came during the pre grunge days of 85-86 with clubs like Gorilla Gardens and Natashas opening. It was the age of crossover! I didnt go to many of these shows cause I was living 100 miles away and was going to college but I hear they were thee premier Seattle act. They were huge in Europe (typical of most underrated bands) and toured with GBH several times. I think GBH was a tremendous influence on the Accused phase two and being able to tour with them was the thrill of a lifetime.

The last time I saw the band was near the end and even Tom had left the sinking ship. Blaine remarked to me, “bet you think its pretty funny that there’s no original members in the band now” to which I replied, “yeah its funny, but if you’re into it than great.” Their show was great that night too!!!

Tom is no longer in Grunttruck but is concentrating on a new project called Hellcat-he is also involved with a Seattle radio station. Dana moved out of state and I manage a record store in Olympia WA. Blain is in a band called The Black Nasty.

In 2005 3 members formed another band, Toe Tag and left The Accused. Guitarist and founding member, Tom Niemeyer continued on with The Accused recruiting 3 replacement members in the months following the walk-out by Cook, Alex Sibbald and Steve Nelson.”… John Dahlin

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

The (new revamped) Accused released their last album, a compilation of older unreleased songs and covers Baked Tapes, in 2006 and have a new album scheduled for release in 2008.

Much of the original Accused Merchandise including CDs, Albums, Shirts, and Artwork are fetching high dollar amounts from auction sites like eBay.

The band is also influenced by Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory music. Their style of music is similar to their compatriots Destruction and Sodom, the other two big German thrash metal bands. All three of these bands are often credited with helping create death metal, by containing a few elements of what was to become death metal.

The Misfits are a punk rock band formed in 1977. The most well known incarnation of the band included singer / songwriter Glenn Danzig, Bassist, Jerry Only, Guitar player, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, and drummer Robo. They were highly influential on the genres of heavy metal and punk, and horror rock. Though they ceased recording and performing in 1983, a new version of the band (led by Only and without founder and former frontman Danzig) began operations in 1995 and have been continuing on since.

When performing, The band wore make-up to appear undead and sported the Devil-Lock look, cladded with leather and spikes, a style still worn by fans or Fiends as the Misfits Fanclub is called the Misfits Fiend Club.

Today the Misfits have a huge underground following.

Thanks to everyone for their support over the past year, Happy Holidays, and enjoy the videos.

Every year around Christmas time one song always manages to get stuck in my head, not sure why, maybe cause the holidays are freakin stressful for anyone over the age of ten, but who knows. Each year I have to dig out this old classic from the Ramones to help me cope, it works pretty good. So here it is one of my all time favorite punk christmas song / video: The Ramones, Merry Christmas.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Another great classic punk Christmas song is by the Sex Pistols - Punk Rock Christmas. Here’s a great video that shows a lot of vintage photos.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Now, since I included Punk Rock Christmas, I have to include another song for my wife with the same title. It’s Green Day (I Know, I Know…)Â doin Punk Rock Christmas, hey comm’on, it’s for my wife and it is Christmas after all.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]Â

Silent Night, the Christmas Classic was covered by The Dickies, now The Dickies were not one of my favorite bands but they were decent enough and do this Christmas class some justice. This Vidio is set to Christmas Lights, enjoy.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]Â

Now, maybe you are thinking I’ve saved the best for last, well that depends on your outlook, this is for all the Bah, Humbuggers out there. It’s a Great Tune and It’s by Fear.

Since I cannot go I thought I would at least plaster this site with some live and not so live footage of the Tossers. The Tossers are a Irish Celtic Chicago Street Punk Sounding Band. When you think of Irish Punk I am sure one band comes to mind. Yep… Boston’s Drop Kick Murphy’s, which happens to be who the Tossers are opening for. It’s gonna be a great show but … for me, maybe next time. Here’s a video by the Tossers.
